Special Procurements:
4.13 - Personal Computer Purchasing

PURPOSE

To define the policy for the purchase of personal computers for Rensselaer Departments.

DEFINITIONS

Personal Computer (PC): A small, single-user device that contains its own processor and hard drive so that it can perform high-speed mathematical or logical operations, either as a stand-alone device or in conjunction with other computers connected to a network. A PC has a keyboard for entering data, a monitor for displaying information, storage devices for saving data, and communication ports for connecting to networks, printers or other data- compatible devices. A PC is typically used to run purchased software.

POLICY

The Rensselaer Campus Computer Store (RCCS) is considered the preferred vendor for purchases of personal computers. RCCS has established preferred vendor agreements through a competitive process which eliminates the need for additional competitive steps by the Department acquiring the products. It is recommended that purchases of personal computers be acquired through the Rensselaer Campus Computer Store.

PROCEDURE

A listing of preferred vendor agreements, pricing, and purchase procedures is available through the Campus Computer Store website and can be viewed at: http://www.rpi.edu/dept/computer_store/ .

When not purchasing through the RCCS under established preferred vendor agreements, the Purchasing Resources policies and procedures with regard to source selection will apply.
